Full-Service Editing
Each manuscript will be treated with the utmost care. Edits include grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, word usage, repetition, awkward phrasing, correct point-of-view, correct tense, consistency issues, and visual layout anomalies. Holistically, I also address story arc, pacing, structure, turning points, plot holes, character development, themes, and tone.
As an added bonus, I also leave reviews.
Sample Edit
Am I the right editor for you?
Author's expectations vary, as do manuscript needs and each editor's style. Make sure we're a good match before you commit to a full edit, because fees are non-refundable.
New clients are urged to request a sample edit via the contact form to assure satisfaction upon project completion. Please include the word count of the finished project.
The Process
I edit in English. Sources I use include the Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
I make changes directly to the manuscript, using the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word, and return the edited document to the author. The author then considers the edit and chooses which changes to accept. At this point, the author must leave Track Changes on so anything added or deleted is easily located. When finished, the author will return the manuscript to me to check over the changes. This back and forth process will continue until the book is finished.
Software Requirements
Microsoft Office.
Payment
Payment is due at the time of purchase. However, if you'd prefer to pay half at the start of the project and half before you receive the final edit, I can accommodate those payment terms.
For fees, see the Pricing page.
Refunds
No refunds. No exceptions. If you cancel a project before I begin, you will be allowed a credit for your next project.
Special Interests
I ask that in the publication of your book, you mention The Novel Edge in the credits. This helps spread the word about my services. In return, I list the author's name and book cover on my website and on other social media platforms. On all these sites, I include a link to each author's website or to their book.
It is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the copyright holder for reprinted material including, but not limited to: song lyrics, photos, poems, newspaper articles, or text.
If a contract is required/requested, I'll provide one to define what's expected from each party. (May cost an additional fee)
Timing & Scheduling
First come, first serve. At the time of purchase, I will give you an estimated date of completion. This will depend on how many manuscripts are in line before yours.
Scheduling an edit weeks to months in advance is perfectly acceptable, so if you're nearing the end of a project, contact me to get your name on my schedule.
Confidentiality
Any documents submitted to me will be kept confidential and secure.
Other Services: Thorough Proofread Only
Sometimes a manuscript only needs a finishing touch. I love proofreading, and I've caught errors in countless books that have already been edited by another editor. For an error-free document without a full edit, choose this option.
While proofreading, I consider consistency, grammar, and many of the other things involved in editing. If I find a manuscript I am editing only requires a proofread, I will recommend that option.
Other Services: Book Formatting
Manuscript formatting includes: .epub, .mobi, .pdf, & a print version for CreateSpace (5x8 unless otherwise specified) and will take approximately three days.
